Private Samuel James Welshman
Samuel James Welshman was born on 16 July 1898 at Drutimy [Drutamy] near Bailieborough, County Cavan, the first of two children of RIC constable William James Welshman and his wife Agnes (née Porter). By the time of the 1911 Census he has living at Poyntz Pass, County Armagh, with his parents and brother.
Welshman enlisted in the North Irish Horse between 29 January and 12 April 1917 (regimental number between 2396 and 2398 or 2400 and 2402, later Corps of Hussars No.71803). He trained at the regiment's Antrim reserve camp before embarking for France in late 1917 or in 1918. There he was posted to one of the squadrons of the 1st North Irish Horse Regiment. This regiment served as corps cavalry to VII, XIX, then V Corps from its establishment in May 1916 until February-March 1918, when it was dismounted and converted to a cyclist unit, serving as corps cyclists to V Corps until the end of the war.
On 9 March 1919 Welshman was demobilised and transferred to Class Z, Army Reserve.
He married Eileen Halligan in the Armagh Registrar's Office on 8 September 1919. By 1934 he was living at 18 Post Office Street, Warrenpoint, County Down, and working as a breadserver. He died there on 8 August that year.
